Luke 9:43-45
“43 And they were all amazed at the mighty
power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did,
he said unto his disciples,
44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the
Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid
from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that
saying.”
As the multitude who was following Jesus stood amazed at the
great miracles He had been performing and witnessing the power of God He
bestowed upon those he healed, Jesus pulls His disciples aside and gives them a
tidbit of what is to come soon. Again, we see Jesus tell His closest followers
of His impending arrest and eventual death at the hands of men. But, like the
crowd they are still in awe of the miracles He just performed. In their minds
they are still hoping Jesus has come as an earthly king. The one who was
promised of old to free Israel from her enemies. But they do not understand
this was not the purpose of His first coming. That would come later, much
later.
Notice in verse 45, they do not understand the saying of
Jesus. And notice it is not for their lack of intelligence but rather because
it was hidden from them. Who hid it from them? Why was it hid from them? Simply
put, often times in the Bible and even today, God has hidden the knowledge of
things from His people. Only to reveal it at a later time as we see with the
disciples of Jesus. It would not be until the Lord opened their understanding a
few days later of what He had been telling them all along. The telling of why
He came and why He would have to leave them. The telling of the events that
would need to take place leading up to His arrest and the events from His
arrest to His death, burial, and resurrection. And the events that would take
place from the time of His ascension back to His Father and the time of His
second coming. All these things Jesus taught His disciples while He was with
them during His earthly ministry. But it was only in God’s timing they would
begin to understand those things. It was only when The Lord opened their
understanding they would begin to understand.
Is it any different for us today? Does God keep things hid
from His people in our modern era of so called enlightenment? It is no
different today. The most scholarly of theologians, if he is truly a child of
God will humbly admit there are things in God’s Word and things in our everyday
lives he does not understand.
Why is it sometimes the simplest of men seems to have a
better understanding of the things of God than the most theologically
educated? Is it possible God has given understanding to some and hid
things to others? Does God have a purpose even in who has knowledge of His
Word? Certainly, He does. Remember God is no respecter of persons.
The warning here is we must be careful when seeking
knowledge. Many will try to force knowledge of the things of God when God has
hidden those things from them for His purpose. They will go as far as to keep
digging until they find the answers that fit what they want instead of waiting
patiently for the Lord to open their understanding. Many will follow after
false teachers and false prophets, while claiming to be seeking truth. When
they don’t get what they want from God’s true preachers they will go after
those who will give them what they want rather than the truth of God’s Word.
Be careful. If God has hidden the knowledge of a matter or a
certain doctrine from you, don’t force knowledge by going outside of the Word
of God for the answer. Look to God for the answers you seek. God and only God
will open your understanding to the truth He has for you and only in His time
will He open our understanding.
Praise ye the Lord!!!
