Morning Devotional January 10, 2013

Psalm 23:4

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death! And oh what a valley it is we walk through every day! Our lives in this old sinful world is one long valley with the shadow of death all around us. I have heard it said that if we could see the spiritual world instead of the physical we would see dead souls all around us everyday. The souls of the unsaved are dead to our Lord. I would dare say in most cases we would see very few alive souls. Most interestingly I think we would see a similar sight in most churches today. As sad as that sounds we as the sheep of the Most High Shepherd have much to be thankful for in the blessings bestowed upon us by our Lord and Savior.

David tells us “I will fear no evil”. Why? Because we are a sheep with a shepherd, The Great Shepherd. II Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” As His children we have no need to fear the dangers of this world but only to trust Him for our protection as we walk about in our daily lives.

He tells us here in the last part of this verse of His rod and staff and their comfort to us. A shepherd uses a rod and a staff to protect his sheep form the dangers that are out there. He will use them to chase off or kill the wolves or bears or what ever danger would befall his sheep. But he will also us those same instruments to correct a sheep that has gone astray. With the rod he will spank the unruly sheep and with the crook of the staff he will draw those that have tried to wander off back into the fold.

It is such a blessing to know we have The Great Shepherd, Jesus Christ who loves us and protects us as we walk through the valley of life. For with out Him we would be as those unsaved souls out there walking around with no hope and no protection from the great wolf satan.

Praise God for His Son Jesus Christ!
